The Central Government Audit Service and the Netherlands Court of Audit brought together auditors from the Dutch central government for a knowledge session on digital threats and how to control them. The keynote walked step by step through a cyberattack: where AI now speeds up the attacker, where the attacker still gets stuck, and what that means for the controls that auditors test. A panel followed, with propositions put to the audience.
Three points from the keynote and panel
Get the basics right. AI makes attacks faster, but most of the gain still lies at the front door: knowing what is connected to the network and how it is configured. That is exactly what an audit can test.
New ways in. A smart video doorbell is meant to improve security, but it can also give attackers a way in. The same goes for an AI tool on the network that is not configured properly.
Open where possible, closed where necessary. Transparency is part of a trustworthy government, but not everything needs to be accessible to everyone.
